The King’s Simple and Luxurious House, Vimanmek Mansion
A century ago, no one would believe the Siamese King had his beautiful home located in a little heavenly location until they were invited to visit at Vimanmek Mansion. It is the favorite place of King Chulalongkorn or King Rama V (1868-1910) even though he had hundred of houses in Thailand. Vimanmek is considered the largest teakwood mansion in the world. The idea of this colonial tropical architecture was inspired by the King’s trip in Europe in 19th century. He was influenced by the European gardens in the palaces and Spanish decorations. Moreover, he wanted to escape from the chaotic, crowded, and suffocating atmosphere in the Grand Palace. Therefore, he constructed his lovely and isolated house, Vimanmek Mansion, in the area of Dusit Palace.
Despite the tropical climate of Thailand, the atmosphere inside the mansion is calm and favorable for everyone. You will enjoy seeing the delicate wood craving decorating the whole mansion. There are approximately 30 rooms divided in five zone by the rooms’ colors such as green, blue, pink, ivory and old rose. The rooms’ colors identify their different functions.
Apart from appreciating this heavenly architecture, you will be impressed by the King’s wonderful collections from Europe. They are, for example, splendid gold ornaments made by famous Russian goldsmith, coins from every part of the world, beautiful arts, and ancient handicrafts. According to the Mansion’s security policy, the tourists are not allowed to take the photo and the camera must be kept in the locker. As the royal premise, it is prohibited to dress improperly.
